What Does It Take to Be Recommended?

To be listed in the HearingUp Network, an audiologist must demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based hearing care. One of the central requirements is the use of Real Ear Measurements (REM) during hearing aid fittings.

Real Ear Measurements involve placing a small probe microphone in the ear canal to verify that a hearing aid is actually delivering the right amount of amplification for that specific person's hearing loss and ear anatomy. Without this verification step, hearing aids are often programmed based on manufacturer averages alone — which may or may not match what a patient actually needs.

Studies consistently show that a significant portion of hearing aids dispensed without REM are not meeting prescriptive targets. That means patients may be walking out of appointments with devices that are under- or over-amplifying sound, even if the hearing aids themselves are high-quality. REM removes the guesswork.
